In the summer of 2005, I made the decision to begin teaching private drum lessons in New York City. I sought the advice from my colleague, Matt Ritter. He suggested having a website and working hard to get the website optimized for search engines.
After building my website and beginning to market myself, I discovered Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. PPC is a popular form of internet marketing. You create a small ad that appears in search engines and/or on other websites. You only pay for the ad when it is clicked. The price of your ad depends on the keyword phrase you choose.
Google Adwords is the most popular PPC service. In addition, Yahoo and Bing also have PPC services. Since Google was the most popular search engine in 2005 (and still is today), I focused on Google Adwords only.
What I Liked
First and foremost, I enjoyed seeing my ad come up first on Google when I searched for “drum lessons in new york city”. Having my ad coming up first really helped me get lots of inquiries about lessons.
I like that you can target ads by location. For example, I had my ads only come up on computers in New York City. If you searched for drum lessons and you were on a computer in New Jersey, my ads wouldn’t come up.
I also liked the fact that you can set a limit on how much you want to spend. After you hit that limit, your ads won’t show anymore.
Overall, I found it so effective that I took my ads down after a month!
What I Didn’t Like
Although many people clicked the ad, only a few took action and signed my email form. This can be frustrating and expensive.
Learn as much as you can about Google Adwords and PPC advertising. A great book to check out is the Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords by Perry Marshall. Also, it’s important to have an email form for people to fill out so they can sign up for lessons. The email form and email marketing program the I use is Infusionsoft.
